Marisa's Last Pose is delightful drawing and remarkably well executed. Karin is a very accomplished artist, but is early in her ventures into the realistic human figure domaine. The figure is well posed and placed on the page and put into context with the chair and nice touch of negative space definition on the left side of her body. Her head is well proportioned and flows into the rest of her shoulders and body. I do like that the artist put some depiction of detail on the portion nearest the viewer, as that helps ';push' her back into the seat. The value range is well done, I especially like the treatment of the model's hair (not as easy to do as it seems). A few suggestions though - proportions are not bad, but her back seems a titch long, one hand seems a titch too small (on her neck) and the other too large. Although the primary light source seems to be from the upper left, a stronger sense of light and shadow would make this a bit more obvious and also help define the wonderful, but subtle, back muscles and bones structure more. There is usually a delightful inverted triangle of structure where a woman's meets her buttocks. Also, some greater shadows as the body curves towards her front would help give a sense of three-dimensionality or 'turning' her body. In summary, this is a very nice drawing from someone who is on a very rapid figure learning curve.

Hi Barry! Just want to say thank you for the excellent critique. I see it more as a compliment than criticism. This is what I was hoping for. To have someone point out the problems, and make suggestions.
I should point out that lighting is often a challenge in our life drawing group. In the case of this drawing, we had the light from the window behind me, plus the light from above, as well as two radiant heaters which also emitted a light onto the model. (It is a large, draughty hall, and it is winter.) I would much prefer one strong light source. I think that is partly why I struggled with this, but also because we only have 20 minutes tops to actually draw from the model.I have to learn to simplify that ornate chair. For some reason the right shoulder looked odd to me by the end of the session,so I tried to fix it later without having the model. That's why I sought an outside opinion. Anyway, I think your critique is fair and generous (as well as kind). Thank you very much, my friend. I will certainly ask your opinion again. By the way, you didn't hurt my feelings at all.
