Description

'Mud Heads' are color studies stemming from Charles Hawthorne and his disciples, like Henry Hensch. The idea is to block out large areas in vivid colors, often colors only present in underlaying traces, and then successively work in complementary and other colors wet-in-wet to approach desired look. [the term mud head comes from the tendency for making dull browns, if not done well). Accuracy of drawing is not primary, but rather exploitation of color and value. The bad news is that it is said that one needs to do 200 of these before learning how to manipulate the brush and oils well, the good news is that I will not subject you all to my 200 (although unlikely that I ever get close ;-) ).

This is my 'first' mud head, an oil of Jiri. 2009

Did you work with a palette knife? I know that was a favorite tool to use from Hensche sometimes.
